The Challenge
The Criterion Collection had an outdated website that made it difficult for visitors to engage with what is truly a treasure trove of content. Because the site was so old, the team at Criterion were unable to take advantage of the technologies that are standard on modern devices, making for a frustrating experience. Ultimately, the site had become a hurdle rather than a tool for growing and supporting their loyal audience.
The Solution
We started by helping them evolve their brand with an eye towards digital. Then we designed a digital platform from the ground up focused on four main areas:

Celebrate the Films
Our goal was to create the best experience on the web for every film in the Criterion Collection. To do this, we created a suite of modules and components that enable the team to build content-rich pages full of clips, images and information, as well as dynamically pulling in related editorial content.
Easy Access
The Criterion Collection’s audience is a diverse, passionate group of people, and our goal was to provide ways for them to experience these films that align with their preferences. We never wanted buying or watching a film to feel rigid or pushy. Rather, we created a system where we are able to surface purchasing and viewing options alongside rich content.
We also created ways for viewers to seek and browse according to their own interests, as well as curated mini-collections that are strategically inserted throughout the experience.
World-Class Editorial
The Criterion Collection’s editorial staff is an incredibly insightful, thoughtful and passionate group of people. They continually commission some of the best writers in the world on the subject of film and needed a platform to present their work in a way that lived up to the calibre of the content.
We designed a publishing system that looks amazing on any device and built a custom CMS designed specifically to fit their needs.
A Dynamic Platform
We built this platform knowing that it would grow and change. We wanted for the team at the Criterion Collection to be able to add features, refine functionality and create content without worrying about how the site would scale and evolve. To do that, we created a living system that we continue to improve upon.
The outcome
Since relaunching Criterion.com sales numbers have consistently gone up and flash sales have outperformed all previous sales. The new CMS has enabled the internal teams to create and launch new, rich content more easily.
